News from the Gardens of Philodassiki | Autumn 2025

Before the year comes to an end, I have the great pleasure of welcoming Ms Katerina Goula, who will be taking on the scientific supervision of the Botanical Garden, succeeding our dear colleague Panagiotis Trigas.

Katerina will help us address issues related to the introduction of plant species we currently lack, as well as the replacement of those that have been lost over the years. Another very important task will be the design of new signage throughout the garden, along with a corresponding review of the plant catalogue. Of course, this is only the beginning!

This autumn, the award for most abundant production goes – by a wide margin – to the strawberry trees. For nearly two months now, they have been laden with their colourful fruits and show no sign of slowing down! This year, their English common name, could not be more fitting.

Another group that has thrived remarkably throughout the garden is mushrooms. I identified three different species in relatively large numbers. Clearly, the unusual weather conditions we are now experiencing have suited them well!

Let us hope, however, that in the coming months we will see a more proper winter, with low temperatures and snowfall lasting more than a couple of days. This would be beneficial for the entire cycle of nature.
